Het is stil in deze Joodse wijk, van de ene op de andere dag zijn hele families verdwenen. 's Avonds is de spanning groot, te groot, het gezin wacht. Het avondeten is voorbij, er heerst een beklemmende stilte, alleen de kleine Suzanne kraait in de box. Eindelijk klinken er voetstappen op het erf, hij zegt niets, en zet de zware eiermand op tafel.
