Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization / Reflect 8

Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization / Reflect 8

Should artists be activists? Is activist art one of an artists primary responsibilities or a pointless sideshow on the fringes of serious politics? The philosopher, writer and art historian Lieven de Cauter, Ruben de Roo and Karel Vanhaesebrouck explore this theme in collaboration with other thinkers and doers in his new book Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization. In a time of globalization, populism, hypercapitalism, migration, War on Terror, and global warming, artistic engagement is vital. Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization takes the measure of contemporary activist art. What is the role of art and activism in the polarized, populist society of the spectacle? Art & Activism examines both the criticism of engagement as a mere pose and the need for cultural activism in todays society. Urban activism and activism by anonymous networks are also investigated. Special attention is devoted to the effects of the War on Terror on activism in practice. The book concludes with a theoretical framework for contemporary activism and an impassioned plea for genuinely political art.    Lieven de Cauter, Ruben De Roo and Karel Vanhaesebrouck co-edited Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization. Contributors include BAVO, Rosi Braidotti, Pippo Delbono, Pascal Gielen, Brian Holmes André Gattolin & Thierry Lefebvre, Rudi Laermans, Dieter Lesage and Jennifer Flores Sternad.;

Hacking habitat

Hacking habitat

Hacking Habitat presents a pressing, topical theme that appeals to a wide audience: the way we are controlled by technological systems and the way counterforces are organized. Innovation goes hand in hand with control: surveillance cameras observe us and inimitable Google algorithms manipulate our behaviour. We risk losing control over our lives. Worldwide, people are waking up to the fact that they need to regain control of their lives and reclaim their living environment (habitat). This lavishly illustrated book presents the work of over 80 international artists working at the intersection of art, technology and social change, including Susan Hiller, William Kentridge, Aram Bartholl, Joseph Beuys, Melanie Bonajo, Metahaven, Johan Grimonprez, Laura Kurgan and Roy Villevoye. In a collection of exploratory and persuasive essays, Hacking Habitat makes us aware of the high-tech systems that have control over our society, and provides tools to use to escape the regulation and control.

Willem de Kooning: a portrait

Willem de Kooning: a portrait

Bert Schierbeek

In 1967 author Bert Schierbeek flew to New York to portray painter Willem de Kooning. They talked for a few days and nights, after which Schierbeek wrote an extensive account in English. Fragments were published in the catalog of the first retrospective of De Kooning in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1968. The full text was never published, due to all sorts of complications and disagreements. The typescript disappeared in a desk drawer and was consequently even untraceable for decades. Recently however, the lost folder suddenly emerged. Although Schierbeek's portrayal has lost its immediate actuality, it remains a personal document that deserves publication after all.
