Offworlder 1: the boy from cell town

Offworlder 1: the boy from cell town

C.M. Chang

Step into the world of NamJu, one of the most appealing characters since Katniss

The young NamJu Abernay lives for only one thing: escaping the slums of Cell Town to play DeathZone, a virtual reality game which pits players head-to-head in a game of life and death. The pain levels are set so high that players leave the arena bruised and bleeding. NamJu’s team, BlackPlanet, is doing well. Really well. But if he wants to keep playing or, more importantly, keep eating, he has to find a job. Sadly, the only ones available are boring and underpaid, so when a friend offers him a chance to win everything his heart desires, he jumps at it. Before he knows it, he’s catapulted into a deadly new game involving three impossible challenges and a being from another planet... an offworlder.

C.M. Chang grew up in the United States with her South Korean parents and later moved to The Netherlands. Chang lives and works in Amsterdam. Offworlder 1 – The Boy from Cell Town is her debut.

Seven of Druids

Seven of Druids

Sylvan Greenfield

An archeology student makes a mystical voyage to save his girl from the Voidshapers - or so he believes. Seven of Druids – Sylvan Greenfield For hundreds of years, the druids of Eresa have been training in secret. The seven clans are battle-hungry. But nothing could have prepared them for what is coming. Aaron Bishop, an archaeology student from Oxford, is on a holiday trip with his girlfriend Denise, when they are suddenly transported to a mystical realm. Gifted and cursed at the same time, Aaron has an ancient magic growing inside him. A Voidshaper, a merciless entity born of negativity, assaults Denise and turns her into one of them. Aaron’s world shatters. Burdened by his lover’s fate, Aaron seeks counsel from the great Ouranis, a Phoenix of untold power, who claims she can give Denise her body back, but only in exchange for Aaron’s help against the Voidshapers – a journey that will change his life forever. --------- An unusual blend of time-travel, mythology and magic, this first-time writer has a good grasp of imagery and a clear and distinct mythology. Light in tone, yet with some scares thrown in and a pretty unique villain, this is a fairly sound first work. The author has an unusual imagination and managed to create a unique environment within a very crowed genre. If it has a downside, it's that there are a lot of minor sub-plots, and sometimes they don't always cohere. Despite this minor niggle, this is a promising start from an author with potential. I'm looking forward to see if he'll expand this world with his next work, or perhaps go for something different entirely! Ramoun (Oxford, UK)

The devil's prophet

The devil's prophet

Adrian Stone

The Devil's Prophet is the first book of the Devil trilogy by Dutch author Adrian Stone. Zabatha, leader and prophet of the Cataris Cult, and most loyal servant of the forbidden god Cataris, discovers in young Marak an exceptional talent for magic. In Carolia, priests and monks can channel their gods' energies and convert them into magic. The prophet would like nothing better than to make Marak his disciple, for having the boy as their pawn could grant the Catarists total domination. Poor Marak is unaware. Worse, he is scarred for life in a way that sets him apart as an adherent of the dreaded Catarists. Fortunately, support comes from an unexpected corner. A high priestess named Verina stands up for Marak and persuades him to undergo the Test, to find out how great his talent really is. This is not without consequence. Against his will, Marak will play a vital part in the game the religious fanatic Zabatha is playing with the world... 'Adrian Stone has created an interesting fantasy world, reminiscent of the Dark Ages. In this world magic is not simply a given, and Stone's thrilling, well-built story benefits from that.' Dutch Library Service (NBD Biblion) about Devil's Prophet. Adrian Stone is the pseudonym for Ad van Tiggelen (1958). Like no other, Stone possesses the literary qualities to encapsulate complicated matters such as religion and history in a compellingly thrilling, classically modelled fantasy story. The fires of war flare up when the patriarchs of the two main religions decide to reinstate their military orders of knights: the Legion of the Sun and the Skull Legion. In the meantime Marak’s friends, a priestess named Armana and a guard officer by the name of Egon, are not just wrestling with the increasing rivalry between the religions, but also with their feelings for each other. It will take a crisis to bring the two together.
And far away on the Shrouded Islands, a child is born. The infant boy will grow up to possess awe-inspiring magical capabilities. Marak is the first to realize what fatal catastrophes would befall the world should the boy end up in the hands of the forbidden Cult of Cataris...

The devil's soul

Adrian Stone

The Devil’s Soul is the third and last book of the Devil trilogy by Dutch author Adrian Stone.

Valdis and his Catarists have conquered the furka woods. All of the druids, except one, have been killed. The sole surviving druid, Tania, manages to escape with the Ring of Loval, using it to stay connected to the woods. But for how long?

The eighth rune

The eighth rune

Adrian Stone

The Eight Rune is the first book of the Rune series by Dutch author Adrian Stone. A direct sequel to his Devil trilogy.

Marak Fourfingers, the hero in Adrian Stone’s Devil-trilogy, is no more.
But the information recorded in his Bequeathed Narratives presents the ruthless God-Emperor of the bleak continent of Kadish with a unique opportunity. Marak’s writings could give him access to the rune that will grant omnipotence, the Eighth Rune, and then the God-Emperor would be invincible. A young rune priest and a sword master are sent to Carolia to steal the book – a near impossible task.
At the same time Serina, a young Viguru priestess from Carolia, is taken captive by rune priests. She will face a time of cruelty and misery in the terrible Home of the Sisterhood, and a humiliating introduction to the God-Emperor. It all makes for a compellingly thrilling adventure in which Adrian Stone shares his visions on timeless, life-determining aspects: power and its misuse, discrimination, global harmony, and how to reach it. The moral of this double story: striving for absolute power is bound to turn against you.

‘The magnificent ending of the story makes me eager for book two. Adrian Stone has surpassed himself.’ Magic Tales about The Eighth Rune

The first god / 2

The first god / 2

Adrian Stone

The First God is the second and last book of the Rune series by Dutch author Adrian Stone. A direct sequel to his Devil trilogy.

Marak Fourfingers, the lead character in Adrian Stone’s Devil-trilogy, is no more than a memory.
The mad God-Emperor of Kadish rules with an iron fist, making full use of the power granted by the Eighth Rune. While he sets in motion his diabolical plans, a lethal mist starts flowing from the tree temple on the Carolian peninsula – a mist that threatens to destroy all life on both continents.
In the meantime, rune priest Ghelan struggles with his recently acquired powers and is faced with a desperate choice. Serina, priestess and harem member, also gets dragged along in the unscrupulous race between power-hunger and survival instinct – a race that affects even the world of the gods.
In this compelling sequel to The Eighth Rune, Adrian Stone again shares his visions on timeless, life-determining aspects: power and its misuse, discrimination, global harmony, and how to reach it.

‘Rune combines classical fantasy with contemporary social themes. The plot is carried by life-like characters and a fascinating setting.’ Fantasywereld.nl

Ye gode boke of knightly conduct

C.D. Perch

Cynthia Perch has led a dramatic, adventurous, dicult life that she is not going to tell you about. Instead, she channeled some of her experiences into her ctional characters, with whom she has more in common than she cares to admit (including an aversion for root vegetables and marriage). Join Sir Diederic and his squire Arnout on their way to the Holy Land, where they ght for freedom, hone their battle-skills, and, most importantly, try to escape the ever-enduring threat of family obligations. Ye Gode Boke of Knightly Conduct is an unequalled, revealing but above all enlightening look into the unusual public and private life and teachings of Sir Diederic of the noble House of Mal a la Tête, told from the point of view of Arnout, his in all likelihood well-meaning, adorable puppy – ahem – squire. This magnicent work bears the approval of the Imperial Family, not to mention Sir Diederic’s esteemed parents. Despite this honour it has been suggested that Sir Diederic had better never discover the content of this labour of love meant to educate the masses – or Arnout will have to take these lessons to heart and run for the hills for survival.
