Contemporary philosophy / uittreksel

Contemporary philosophy / uittreksel

Into the white

Into the white

Gregory De Vleeschouwer

Into the White lays bare a hidden overall logic in Kafka's work. Instead of restoring an initial but perturbed balance - the standard pattern for a piece of fiction -, Kafka's characters always do the opposite: they do everything they can to maintain the imbalance. The book shows how this should be linked to Kafka's own attitude as a writer. Writing, for Kafka, always gave birth to promises that could not be kept. It opens up gates that the writer is not allowed to enter. In the stories that deal with this, Kafka invariably points to the intricate and even impossible relationship between the artist and his or her public. By drawing on contemporary research into the constitution of human self-consciousness (and the intricate relationship between nature and culture), Into the White brings us surprising but also perfectly recognizable insights into the nature of fiction and narrativity, and more broadly, into the very process of generating meaning. The book also sheds new light on many aspects of popular culture.

Utopia 1516-2016

This year marks the five-hundredth anniversary of Thomas More's widely influential book Utopia, and this volume brings together a number of scholars to consider the book, its long afterlife, and specifically its effects on political activists over the centuries. In addition to thorough studies of Utopia itself, and appraisals of More's relationship with Erasmus, the book presents detailed studies of the effect of Utopia on early modern England and the Low Countries, as well as philosophical reflections on ideology and the utopian mind, and much more.

Whose weight is it anyway?

Whose weight is it anyway?

It is a simple truth: nobody can do without food. But to solely describe food as a biological need would be too limited, neglecting the fact that food is a social and cultural practice as well. Despite its appearance, food is not even morally neutral. It is this moral aspect that is being explored in the book. Scholars from various disciplines address the ethical perspective of changing food habits in general, and the promotion of healthy eating in particular. While it is certainly the case that some people consider their health when deciding what to eat, health is seldom the only motive for their choice. What many campaigns for healthy food seem to neglect, is the fact that the way we eat and what we eat is related to our personal and social identity and to culture and tradition. As such, food comes with a lot of values. The interdisciplinary approach of this book is unique and offers insights from a raneg of fields such as sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, and feminist studies.

Reframing

Reframing

Karim Benammar

This book examines two fundamental philosophical questions: Why do we do the things that we do? And how can we do things differently? A factory owner who encourages his employees to set their own salary, the sustainable production of cars, the revolutionary ideas of Nietzsche, Thomas Kuhn and Michel Serres - Benammar shows how creative ideas emerge when people dare to analyse and reframe their core beliefs. The world changes and we have to change with it. In this book, the technique of reframing is applied to personal situations, to business models and to global questions about our future. Presented in a rich philosophical context, reframing is a simple, four-step tool to generate creative approaches for your own life. Reframing will take you out of your mental comfort zone. If you can make yourself chuckle, you're on the right path.

The sexual system

The sexual system

Dik Brummel

This is not just another book about sex and sexuality, but a description of the sexual system, in which sex difference, sexual desire, reproduction and the family form a coherent whole. The sexual system is the foundation of our lives and of society as a whole. It provides an explanation for such diverse problems as the inadequacy of human relationships, injustice, hunger and war. Religion, language, politics and culture also appear in a new light if they are regarded as embodiments of the sexual system. This approach represents a Copernican shift in a sexology that aspires to be a true science. Instead of examining the influence of society on sexual behaviour (which undeniably exists to some small degree) we should look at things the other way round, and consider social structures as the very manifestations or expressions of sex distinction, marriage, motherhood and family. This different perspective also offers a new framework for the continuing process of sexual reform. Human intervention in the reproductive process could extend far beyond its current scope, which holds a promise for human and environmental health, and for the liberation of love as lust.

Our strange body

Jenny Slatman

The ever increasing ability of medical technology to reshape the human body in fundamental ways - from organ and tissue transplants to reconstructive surgery and prosthetics - is something now largely taken for granted. But for a philosopher, such interventions raise fundamental and fascinating questions about our sense of individual identity and its relationship to the physical body. Drawing on and engaging with philosophers from across the centuries, Jenny Slatman here develops a novel argument: that our own body always entails a strange dimension, a strangeness that enables us to incorporate radical physical changes.
