Cancer, development and prevention

Don Elsman

Cancer can happen to anyone. You could almost call yourself lucky if you don't get it. Being diagnosed with cancer is a huge shock, completely out of the blue, for anyone. "Why is this happening to me?!" Why does the WHO in 2016 ask to take preventive measures against cancer, while physicians are only able to detect cancer at an early stage? Why has the number of cancer patients today doubled since 1990??! What has happened in the (recent) past that caused the human race to suffer from this plague in the last 50 to 60 years??! The content of this booklet is not about following food regulations, banishing sugar, exercising, or anything like that. A clear cause will be identified. A clear solution will be presented. Read what crucial blunder has been made that caused the massive worldwide(!) growth of cancer! This is CODE RED!

Everywhere Taksim

Isabel David

In May 2013, a small group of protesters made camp in Istanbul's Taksim Square, protesting the privatisation of what had long been a vibrant public space. When the police responded to the demonstration with brutality, the protests exploded in size and force, quickly becoming a massive statement of opposition to the Turkish regime. This book assembles a collection of field research, data, theoretical analyses, and cross-country comparisons to show the significance of the protests both within Turkey and throughout the world.

iLobby.eu

iLobby.eu

Caroline de Cock

What is an efficient EU lobbying strategy? Are there dos and donts you should be aware of, as a businessman or lobbyist? What is the use made of social media by EU institutions and politicians? iLobby.eu sets out how to lobby the EU from the perspective of an actual lobbyist sharing her experience (both good and bad). It also looks at the social media tools that must be taken into consideration when campaigning and details examples of worst and best practices. The book encompasses three parts: - The first part looks at lobbying more generally and gives answers in each of its chapters to the questions: Who should you lobby, About what, When, and How, with practical tips and anecdotes; - The second part specifically looks at the use of social media tools (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) in the area of lobbying and politics, including hands-on recommendations; - The third part comprises a practical annex, including a description of the European Parliament agenda, a glossary of terms, a comparative table of the various readings under co-decision, several examples of layouts of official documents, etc. iLobby.eu will help any business person with activities in Europe and wishing to understand what their company should consider before hiring a lobbyist or setting its lobbying strategy. More generally, lobbyists across the globe, activists, think thanks, journalists, students in political science, business administration and/or law, and anyone interested in understanding the way EU decision-making works and how lobbying is changing under the influence of social media should read the book. About the author Caroline De Cock brings her hands-on experience as a lobbyist and euroblogger/twitterer to this practical guide to lobbying at the EU level, including the use of social media. She is the owner of N-square Consulting, a Brussels-based lobbying firm specialised in the Internet and telecoms sector, and represents such high tech multinationals and trade associations at EU level.

JES!

JES!

Frank van Empel

The joint effort society is a new political engagement model. One reviewer stated: 'JES! is more of a manifest or at least a book filled with ideas how to shape society. Fascinating, ambitious and worth reading.' This book shows how decisionmaking, behaviour and institutionalization / technology can contribute to a rising level of wellbeing for all people. It also describes how to create a joint effort society, where all individuals are equal and freely associate into the new political engagement model that is rooted in open and connected local communities, allowing individuals to engage, participate and learn. The approach that leads towards a joint effort society is called ecolution. It involves a transition towards a higher ecological, economic, social and psychological level that takes the wellbeing of 7 billion people into account each time we act. The theory of ecolution offers a new conceptual framework, toolbox and method in the form of a dynamic matrix. It supports growing awareness and inspires to different thinking and acting. JES! is the follow-up of the thesis Allemaal Winnen (Only Winners), 2012 Authors: Frank van Empel & Caro Sicking;

Materialising identity

Materialising identity

Judith Schueler

Since its opening in 1882, the Gotthard Railway with its 15-kilometer long tunnel under the Gotthard Mountains, provides a crucial international link through the Swiss Alps, between North-Western Europe and Italy. In contrast to many other railway lines, its symbolic meaning has never sunk into oblivion. In Swiss society today, references to the Gotthard myth are multifaceted and omnipresent. Not only do they evoke images of a technological railway project, they also allude to Swiss history, alpine nature and national identity. Reading this book assists in understanding the old and contemporary discussions about the future of the Gotthard Railway, the regions in which it lies and the Swiss national identity.
Curiosity-driven, this research combines viewpoints from the history of technology, cultural studies and cultural geography to grasp the intensity of the Gotthard as a national Swiss image. Whereas the relationship between the Gotthard Mountains and the Swiss national identity has received ample scholarly attention, the role of the Gotthard Railway remains largely unexplored.

To illustrate to what extent historical actors co-constructed the railway and Swiss identity, the empirical chapters start with an analysis of an engineering discussion about tunneling methods. Hereafter, the book examines the reactions in Switzerland to the inauguration of the railway line. Subsequently, it describes the appreciation of the railway line portrayed in travel guides of the belle époque. The last chapter captures the glory days of the Gotthard myth, before and during the Second World War, with a focus on the novels and plays, in which the Gotthard Tunnel construction occurs. This historical overview offers insight into the multiple roles that technology plays in the construction of a sense of national identity as well as illustrating how identity has an effect on the appropriation of a technological railway project.

Revolution justified

Revolution justified

Roger H.J. Cox

Military reports warn that impending energy problems will endanger Western society and threaten to weaken ties between states and their citizens, undermining the very foundations of democracy and the rule of law. Energy issues will also set the stage for more aggressive geopolitics and will substantially destroy the ecosystem services on which society is wholly dependent. These are but a few of the impacts that the double energy problem of climate change and oil decline have in store for us. In this illuminating book, attorney and pragmatic visionary Roger Cox sets out and analyzes these energy stress tests, going on to explain why neither the market mechanism nor today’s political model are capable of initiating an energy revolution to solve these issues. This deadlock situation has the potential to bring about the very downfall of Western society, as this book explains, and will at the very least put Western countries at risk of committing domestic human rights violations on a scale nobody had thought to ever see again after World War II. Precisely this threat of human rights violations puts the judiciary in a position to step in and lead Western governments out of the dangerous deadlock. Drawing and expanding on examples and cases from the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Europe and the European Union, this book demonstrates that the West’s legal systems already contain all the elements needed to achieve an energy revolution faster and more effectively then any other alternative. In his book Revolution Justified Mr. Cox calls for judicial intervention to save the planet and humanity from dangerous climate change. In his opinion governments have become a danger to the wellbeing of society due to their inaction to regulate greenhouse gases. “Our best hope of averting dangerous climate change and breaking the status quo in the energy world is the law”, he poses. In 2013 Mr. Cox issued proceedings against the Dutch government on behalf of the Dutch NGO Urgenda and 900 Dutch Citizens. In June 2015 these proceedings concluded with an unprecedented and groundbreaking verdict in which the District court in The Hague ordered the Dutch government to reduce its CO2 emission by at least 25% in 2020 (compared to 1990 levels). Mr. Cox is now helping to set up a network of NGO’s and lawyers for climate proceedings in other countries. With his help and advice, similar proceedings have already been instituted in Belgium. Next to his (climate) litigation practice, Mr. Cox is heading the real estate, city development, energy and infrastructure practice at the law firm Paulussen Advocaten. Mr. Cox is also founder of the Planet Prosperity Foundation, via which he is promoting the circular economy. The Dutch Green Building Council selected Mr. Cox as one of the most influential people in sustainable real estate development. He is also listed in Trouw newspaper’s Sustainability Top 100. He is a visiting university lecturer, publishes regularly and holds seats at several business councils on sustainable development.

The disruptive competence

The disruptive competence

Fabiaan van Vrekhem

Mental models bring structure to the current chaos. But how do these models get formed? What is their impact on our way of venturing into the business world? How do they influence society? This book gives answers by returning to the essence. Mental models bring structure to the current chaos. But how do these models get formed? What is their impact on our way of venturing into the business world? How do they influence society? This book gives answers by returning to the essence. How do managers adapt their strategy to the permanent changes in their environment? How do they create value? Why do we look for experience, and why do we wonder less if people are able to translate a certain complexity to concrete output, service, methods, concepts, and societal interests? What are the seven complexity dimensions, determining organizational and individual development? How do these dimensions explain why one organization deals successfully with change while another systematically become a victim of it? The answers in this book offer an innovative, yet pragmatic, insight into strategic, organizational, and talent development.

Two Centuries of Solidarity

Two Centuries of Solidarity

K.P. Companje

Today, health insurance is a key component in the system of social security in most European Union countries. In many of these countries, modern health-insurance funds and healthcare insurers play an essential role in implementing the public health-insurance system. Many of these health-insurance funds have a long and fascinating history, of which clear traces can be seen today in the organisation and structure of health insurance, as well as health-insurance funds and insurers. In Two centuries of solidarity, the authors compare the systems of health insurance, health-insurance funds and healthcare insurers in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Given the similar political, economic and social development that these countries have undergone in the past 60 years and the availability of a qualitatively high level of health care, one might expect a high degree of similarity between these countries¿ healthcare insurance systems. However, the dissimilarities are surprising. In fact, these differences are currently becoming ever more apparent between systems in general, and the structure and operation of the health insurance funds and health care insurers in particular. The differences include the compulsory nature of insurance, the extent of coverage, premiums, entrepreneurship, competition, and the degree of private insurance. Many of these national singularities can be understood and explained only by considering the historical background of the health insurance systems, the insurers, and their evolution over the past two centuries. This study adopts an institutional and political perspective towards a further understanding of the development of health insurance, and of how this ultimately determined the specific nature of the healthcare insurers and funds and the way they currently operate in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Karel-Peter Companje is Head of the Knowledge Centre History of Social Health Insurance at the Free university Amsterdam. Karel Veraghtert is emeritus professor in history at Tilburg University. Brigitte Widdershoven is policy employee at the Technical University Delft.

Waiting experience at train stations

Waiting experience at train stations

Mark van Hagen

In the railway sector there is a great deal of interest in objective time but hardly any in passengers subjective experience of time. The focus of this publication is thus not on (shortening) objective time but on how time itself is experienced and how this can be improved. Aware that a journey must not only be quick but also pleasant, Netherlands Railways (NS) consequently sets itself the following objective: To transport our passengers safely, on time and in comfort via appealing stations. Particularly the wait is found to be unpleasant, with passengers regarding stations and especially platforms as sombre, boring and grey places, devoid of atmosphere and colour. By improving the waiting environment, we can kill two birds with one stone: passengers will find waiting more pleasant and the waiting time will appear to be shorter. The practical question in this research thus reads: Which measures are effective to make the waiting time at stations more pleasant and/or to shorten the perception of waiting time? After obtaining his degree in economic geography at Utrecht University, Mark van Hagen (8 November 1961) worked for the Province of Noord-Brabant and Schiphol Airport. Since 1990, Mark has been employed by Netherlands Railways, holding various positions in which the constant focus of his research and policy advice has been on the customer.
