Dutch-ess from the Himalayas

Kirtika van Hunen

The author grew up in the lap of the Himalayas where the snow clad mountains are almost like a back drop. Cupid’s arrow binds her to a Prince Charming from Holland where she migrates to and starts a life among the flatlanders. What is it like to dive headlong into another culture? After having worn a different shoe and romped in the Himalayas, was it just as easy as slipping into a pair of clogs and walking on….? Facing cultural challenges that arises in a marriage of an ‘East meets West culture’ environment, struggling with questions like, what are the expectations of a Dutch ‘Schoondochter’ daughter-in-law? How does one move about in a Dutch society? What comes easy and what are the thresholds and why? In a unique manner of recounting her journey across two cultures, the author not only reveals the peculiar habits of the flatlanders, but also gives a glimpse of her own culture back home to the readers. A very compelling comparison of the two cultures and mind sets. If you are looking for a light read with a dash of humour and a cup of tea to go by, look no further for you have the former in your hand but will need to get your own tea!!

An inside look

An inside look

Raphael Sorton

An autobiographic tale of the life of a little boy, born May 23rd, 1946 on a 5 square mile Island called Saba, with appr. 900 inhabitants and who had to leave his homeland to further his education abroad. Many years later, he returned to fill the functions of Administrator, Act. Lt. Governor on that Island, and topping his career off as Act. Director and Act. Minister Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands Antilles in The Hague, Holland. His journey through the realms of the Antillean Government and interaction with officials and politicians, generally of Curaçao origin, brought to light, underlying racial, arrogant and superiority tendencies, towards foreign investors, persons from other Islands, and even amongst themselves. This all attributed to the faltering answers of why, despite sound efforts, attracting foreign investment to the Island, was never really successful. The highlight of his career was taking the oath of office in hands of her Majesty Queen Beatrix.
